Commission on the Marriage Canon recommends expanding the definition of marriage

In 2013 the General Synod passed a resolution directing the drafting of a motion “to change Canon XXI on marriage to allow the marriage of same-sex couples in the same way as opposite-sex couples, and that this motion should include a conscience clause so that no member of the clergy, bishop, congregation or diocese should be constrained to participate in or authorize such marriages against the dictates of their conscience.” Such a motion will be considered by the 2016 General Synod.

WORLD PRIDE participants welcome at Church of the Holy Trinity

The congregation of Holy Trinity Anglican parish in downtown Toronto extends a warm welcome to those gathering from around the globe for the celebration of World Pride. Our church has a long history of welcoming lgbt folk and taking action for justice for gays, as you will see from the timeline that follows.

Please join us for worship if you wish on Sunday, June 29 at 10:30 a.m. We anticipate welcoming Davis Mac-Iyalla, a Nigerian gay activist now living in the United Kingdom because of the danger to him in Nigeria, who will preach.

Toronto Pride

You can see Holy Trinity’s tall banner with the message: “Every day is Pride Day at Holy Trinity”

Occupy Toronto was invited to march with Proud Anglicans.  There were loud cheers wherever we were along the whole parade route.

And the new t-shirts were a big hit.  Wearing a clergy collar with a t-shirt actually works, but it looks a little weird.

Want to order a Holy Trinity PRIDE T-Shirt?

We are taking orders for Holy Trinity Pride t-shirts.  The more orders we have, the bigger the discount, so if we were to order 10 shirts with the design front and back, the cost would be $22.70 CAD plus HST.  Shirts come in sizes S, M, L, XL and 2XL.  Colour options are: White, Red, Gold, Ash Gray, Teal, Black, Navy, Light Blue, Kelly Green, Royal Blue.

To order send an email to shesselgrave AT with the following information:

Your name and physical address (in case you don’t pick your shirt up)

Number of shirts with size and colour indicated.

Shirts can be picked up at Holy Trinity on Pride Sunday (July 1st) or by arrangement.

Please submit your order by Wednesday, June 27.

Invitation: Meeting to Discuss the Diocesan Guidelines on Same Sex Blessings

June 8, 2011 at 7:00pm
Church of the Holy Trinity
Refreshments provided

The Church of the Holy Trinity invites you to a meeting to discuss both the recently released guidelines on same sex blessings and the process of identifying participating churches.  We would like to have a discussion among those churches who have been invited to participate and churches who are interested in conducting same sex blessings but have not been explicitly invited.

We would like to know how people in various church communities view the guidelines:

  • What theological perspective do they reflect?
  • Do they represent a step forward?
  • Will the process enhance the inclusion of gay and lesbian people in the Anglican Church of Canada in this diocese?

We would like to share our views and to hear yours.  Please consider sending wardens, lay delegates, clergy or members of gay and lesbian groups in your parishes.  We hope to have a lively and fruitful discussion which might help coordinate responses.

Please RSVP to Sherman Hesselgrave at  All are welcome!

Church of the Holy Trinity Called to Bless Same-Sex Marriages

For Immediate Release
TORONTO-June 17, 2007 – On the eve of a national meeting of the Anglican Church of Canada (General Synod) in which the blessing of same-sex unions is to be debated, the Church of the Holy Trinity, an Anglican Church in downtown Toronto, pledges to bless same-sex unions regardless of the outcome.

In a special meeting of the congregation, members declared this issue to be a matter of love, justice and ultimately conscience. “Providing an equal pastoral response to same-sex couples who present themselves for blessing or marriage as to couples of the opposite sex is a matter of conscience and integrity for the clergy and people of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto”, the statement says.

In taking this step, the congregation affirmed their intention of remaining in the Anglican Church of Canada and the worldwide Anglican communion. “We are sincerely hoping that General Synod will recognize the sanctity and equality of same-sex relationships. But if they do not, we must do what we are called in conscience to do. It is not our intention to leave, but to stay in our Church and have our act of conscience respected”, says Jim Love, Warden at Holy Trinity.

The Church of the Holy Trinity has long been a leader on social justice issues, including solidarity with gay and lesbian people. In
addition to this public statement, the church has sent an open letter to the Canadian House of Bishops, and a message to all General Synod delegates asking them to move forward in justice. “We simply can’t wait any longer, and continue to call ourselves a people serving a God of justice and love”, says The Reverend Sara Boyles, Incumbent at the Church of the Holy Trinity.

General Synod 2007 of the Anglican Church of Canada begins June 19th in Winnipeg .
