9 am - registration with coffee available in the church
9:30 to 12:00 – workshop 1
12:00 to 2:00 – lunch in the church with jam sessions around various kitchen tables
2:00 to 4:30 – workshop 2
5:00 to 6:00 – stage performances of the songs learned in the workshops
Workshops
Each participant will stay with the same workshop leader all day. Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 musicians.
Alan Gasser – Vocals
Alan will lead a singing workshop of ‘roots’ music that will feature songs from the simple to the complex. Some of the songs will be intended to be accompanied by the musicians in the other workshop areas. Students need no experience but enthusiasm is essential. (Some space still available). Anne Lederman – Bowed Instruments
Anne will teach a cross section of traditional tunes as well as teaching accompaniment for a selection of the songs to be sung. This workshop requires command of your instrument and is not intended for beginners. It will appeal to classic violinists who would like to learn to fiddle as well as fiddlers who wish to learn how to accompany singers and play a variety of fiddle styles. Tom Leighton – piano, accordion, percussion (hand drums/spoons/bones)
Tom will teach chording and improvisation to accompany other musicians as well as how to accompany singers. with Accordian players of all levels welcome especially those who wish to learn the use of Left Hand Buttons/chording. Piano players will be taught accompaniment skills to play along with other instruments and singers. If you cannot bring your own keyboard it is possible to provide one. (Some space still available). Lunchtime jams
12 – 2pm lunch jams with three sessions to join:
- Celtic – a combination of Irish and Scot songs hosted by guitarist/singers Rod Layman and Robert Steiner from the band Birling;
- Canadian folk songs hosted by singer/guitarist Keith Nunn from the band Fallen Angles;
- Bluegrass hosted by singer/guitarist Mark Carabetta and singer/banjoist Frank Mitchell from the Casual Bluegrass Band.
As well, singers/musicians are free to form sessions of their own. A set list for each of the planned sessions will be given to participants along with lyrics/chords/notation.
Additional information
All ages are welcome but children under 16 must be accompanied.
The cost is $80 per participant. There will be a healthy lunch and snacks served at nominal cost. There will be complementary coffee all day.
